Flip and Read Books

I’m sure we can all agree that small group instruction time is PRECIOUS!  I wanted to create a resource that would be easy to prep for teachers and easy to use when in the hands of students. So, viola! Flip and Read books were born!

WHAT ARE FLIP AND READ BOOKS?

Flip and Read Books help your students tackle and master EVERY SINGLE phonics pattern! Instead of using phonics flash cards or boring repetitive practices, Flip and Read books allow your students to interact with the sound spellings in a multitude of ways. With these books, students can practice reading phonics words in isolation AND in context.

Like I mentioned above, they are PERFECT for small group instruction (and RTI). But, they also work wonderfully at Word Work/centers or even for independent practice!  I suggest laminating the books and putting them on rings. You could even go a step further and display them on hooks near your small group table for easy access. Have students practice the books over and over until they reach mastery!

These books are an excellent way to get students to apply the sound spelling to their reading and writing. I’ve broken down each part of the Flip and Read books below:

INTRODUCE THE SOUND-SPELLING

The first page shows the sound spelling and a picture example. Students can re-read this as many times as they need to.

SAY IT, READ IT

This page requires students to say the picture and then read the word. I like to also have students segment the word before reading it. An easy way to do that is to practice segmenting using a strategy I call  “Penny In the Pot.” Students can drop pennies (or any small objects) into cups as they say each sound in the word. After they segment the word, have them practice reading it!

MATCH IT UP!

This page requires students to read a short sentence and match it to the correct picture.

READ AND CIRCLE!

This page requires students to read a short story two times and then go back and circle the words that have the phonics pattern being taught.

SEE IT, WRITE IT!

For this page, students will say the picture and then write the word. If you wish, students can segment the word before writing it (you could have them practice using the strategy “Penny In the Pot” again).

WRITE YOUR OWN!

For this page, students will read all of the words in the word bank. Then, they will write a short story using three of the words.
